Discovering Magie
International Biennal Artist Magie Traynor started her career in Glasgow, Scotland as an illustrator for advertising agencies including the renowned Saatchi & Saatchi and Ogilvy & Mather. Around this time she continued to study art part time at the distinguished Glasgow school of art and later at St Martins Art College, London. She left London in 1993 to travel throughout Southeast Asia bringing her to settle in Singapore. She has exhibited in Glasgow, London, Berlin and Singapore but mainly sells her work to private collectors and corporate institutions. Her corporate clients have primarily been in the hotel sector, having been commissioned to paint and create designs for hotel lobbies for both the Sheraton and Shangri La Group. Alongside this, Magie has for many years been an art educator in Singapore running her own art workshops teaching both creative art and the skills of figurative drawing and painting in collaboration with art galleries and art institutions including the Singapore Heritage Board.
Magie has experimented over the years with various mixed media. Although she executes her work in abstract expressionist fashion, the content is usually surreal using a symbolic language for the spiritual messages that she consciously and subconsciously wishes to reveal. Optical illusions and distorted imagery work hand in hand, portraying hidden realism.
